The artwork features a tiara-wearing Beyoncé Knowles, age 10 or so, in a room crammed with trophies. The lyrics make the message clear:

“I’m the number-one chick, I don’t need no hype.”

Musically, this Hit Boy-produced diptych is a homage to B’s hometown, Houston, with a woozy “Bow Down” beat that segues into a chopped-and-screwed rap. In “I Been On,” her voice is pitch-shifted to make her sound like a 400-pound thug as she gets in touch with her inner Pimp C:

“Gold everything/Gold-ass chain/Gold-ass rings/Gold-ass fangs”

All in all, it’s her most aggressive song ever: a shot at the diva competition and a warning to anyone who’d take the wrong message from the title of her forthcoming LP, Mrs. Carter:

“I took some time to live my life/But don’t think I’m just his little wife.”

When she sings, she growls; when she raps, she sneers. Bow down – or at least take cover. To check it out on Rolling Stone click here.

No writers were harmed in the making of this list, but it’s worth mentioning that I nearly “put them paws” on an esteemed colleague who argued that BeyoncĂ© belonged on his Most Anticipated Pop Albums — in the pleasant company of Selena Gomez and the JoBros — and not here alongside the architect of her megahit “Single Ladies” or, say, the opening act she hand-picked for her Revel run.

Yes, Queen Bey’s rule spans the globe, but she’s an R&B singer from her head to her Louboutins. That was never more clear than on her critically acclaimed last album, 4, which found Ms. Knowles bravely doing an about-face from the radio-ready formula of Sasha Fierce in favor of low-simmering heat like “1+1” and the Grammy-nominated “Love on Top.” Bey may not have burned up the charts but she helped renew our faith in soul music.

And it wasn’t just BeyoncĂ© who went to bat for rhythm and blues. 2012 saw the genre waging a comeback with assists from acts like Frank Ocean and the Weeknd. We’re just as hopeful for the crop of discs scheduled to drop this calendar year, our Most Anticipated R&B Albums of 2013.

Daughter Blue Ivy turns 1 today (January 7), but we have a feeling the multitasking mommy will be cutting records and cake. Whether those records feature cameos from Justin Timberlake, Lady Gaga or husband Jay-Z is still unknown but we do know super-producer The-Dream, newbie Miguel and “Irreplaceable” writer Ne-Yo are all onboard for her upcoming release.

Beyonce’s performance at the Super Bowl halftime show, taking place at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans on Feb. 3, 2013, will be preceded by new music, according to her frequent collaborator The-Dream.

After co-writing five songs on Beyonce’s 2011 album “4,” The-Dream (real name: Terius Nash) tells Billboard that he’s “involved in every part of the process” for her forthcoming fifth solo album. When asked whether or not Beyonce will unveil any new tracks prior to Super Bowl kickoff, The-Dream says, “Definitely. She’s got her stuff going. She took the summer to start recording, and now she’s in a place where she’s ready to start gearing up to reveal her plan.”

The-Dream adds that the follow-up to “4” is so far along that multiple song releases are possible in the two months prior to Super Bowl Sunday. “She’s already gearing up to get ready to put stuff out,” he says. “I’m sure there will probably be a couple records you hear before the Super Bowl gets here.” Read the rest of this entry »
